Hi,
My name is alistair and this is my website. It exists mainly because around 2016ish I wanted to buy my domain name _alistairmichael.com_ and then felt that having it lying around doing nothing was a bit of a waste.
I like playing with computers to learn new software tools and seeing what I can do with them, so really this is part of that and I'm not sure what actual content to put here. For the most part my waking mind is occupied by Linux and Open Source software, a tiny bit of computer gaming and whatever is on the front page of hackernews[^1]...so probably that. Meanwhile, this site is easily discoverable given my email address uses this domain so I have to be a bit nervous about it quite possibly being someone's (like a prospective employer's) second impression of me. Nothing like early 2010s cyber-fearmongering as a generation of millenials grew up to discover their teenage blogs are deeply cringeworthy to make me hesitant to post things online.
I have wanted to do a blog properly for a few years now. Part of it is because I really _want_ to engage with Internet culture but don't possess the chaotic energy to do social media well. More importantly, it is because of all the times some random guy's blog post about his pet project has helped me solve an obscure technical problem I was having, or to learn about a new software tool or exciting toy. I want to be that dude. I have also felt inspired by the fantastic blogs I've come across, like codinghorror, 2bithistory, and the mozilla hacks blog.
